UIAA STANDARD CERTIFICATION

UIAA standard 156 – Certification for avalanche rescue shovels

For decades, the UIAA Safety Commission has been developing safety standards for mountain sports equipment. The new UIAA test procedure on loading of avalanche shovels has now introduced the first test structure for assessing the suitability of avalanche rescue shovels.

What does the standard state?

For the first time, the new standard has specified uniform requirements in relation to the appropriate size and strength of an avalanche rescue shovel.

The standard ultimately defines the load an avalanche shovel needs to withstand during a rescue operation before the material fails.

Test method and standard specifications

For the bending test, up to half of the blade of the shovel (test sample) is cast in an epoxy resin block. This corresponds approximately to the insertion of the shovel when digging in the snow and this practical relevance increases the validity of the test result.

The test sample is then subjected to a bending force of 300 N on the handle of the shaft. The test is carried out in two different loading directions, representing the typical load in an avalanche rescue scenario.

The deformation difference of the test sample must not exceed 5% of the original state and no part of the shovel may fail by breaking.

For the pull test, the test sample is clamped lengthwise along the blade and handle. The test sample is then subjected to a tensile force of 1000 N. The test is passed if there are no failures in any section of the shovel.

Only shovels that meet all of the test criteria are permitted to bear the UIAA Safety Label for avalanche rescue shovels.

What is the benefit for customers?

Reports of broken avalanche shovels are unfortunately all too common these days and a sad reality. The new UIAA standard for avalanche shovels allows customers to immediately identify in points of sale which avalanche shovels meet the practice-oriented requirements. The UIAA Safety Label therefore represents a seal of quality for innovation and quality standards for avalanche shovels and the brand behind them.

Does Mammut meet the new standard 156?

From the winter of 2018/19, all Mammut shovels will meet the new UIAA standard and be permitted to bear the UIAA Safety Label. This will undoubtedly make it easier for customers to compare individual shovel manufacturers.
